Twenty-five regional Civil Air Patrol cadets - including a handful from Santa Monica - worked on their rocketry badges July 3 at the Tehachapi Municipal Airport during their week-long Aviation Camp. Shown, Uniqwa Allen, 15, of Boron, prepares to fire her single-stage Alpha rocket. The solid-fuel rockets are fired electronically from a distance and go up 400-500 feet. During their Aviation Camp, the cadets toured the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and California Institute of Technology; they hopped aboard a C-17 for a flight at Edwards Air Force Base and were treated to behind-the-scenes tours of the NASA complex and the Air Force Research facility at Edwards.
