Tehachapi Community Theatre announces open auditions for 26 roles in the first annual Playwright’s Festival. Auditions are at TCT’s second space 431 W. J St., near Spirited Bead and the Southern California Edison buildings, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday Oct 12 and 13.

The roles range from 16 to old age, and are evenly divided between men and women.

TCT will offer eight world premiers, each one directed by a TCT member and featuring community performers. Many of the writers will be in attendance during the festival, which takes place at the BeeKay Theatre Nov. 20 to 22. Questions may be directed to 822-4037.

“Since the plays are short, 10 minutes maximum, it’s a perfect opportunity for first-timers to audition. Rehearsal commitments will be far less than for a full-length play—just a few hours. And learning the lines will be relatively easy. It’s really a very safe way to test the waters,” noted festival producer Karl Schuck.

“We are especially looking for actors of color to fill critical roles. Needed are at least one young black male and two mature black women,” said director Annette Kirby.

“Lots of other roles can be cast color-blind--that is, without regard to the race of the actor,” commented director Kenny Chugg.

The plays were selected by a panel of judges from among 45 submitted during the summer. The winning plays, and their directors, are “Goat” director Annette Kirby; “Mona Maise and MacGregor Cayle” director Cindy Latham; “The Ninth Bell” director Kenny Chugg; “Lost Worlds” director Steve Kirby; “Blood from a Stone” director Michael Gossage; “Eating Existentialism” director Doug Jockinson; “When Oprah Says Goodbye” director Alex Zonn and “Offender” director Mark Fisher.
