A 17-year-old Tehachapi High School student overturned his truck on a dirt stretch of Pinon Street behind school property, police said.

His passenger, a 15-year-old Tehachapi High School student, was taken to Tehachapi hospital with minor injuries, Tehachapi Police Officer Wayne Horning said.

The driver was not injured.

The driver was heading west on an unpaved section of Pinion Street in a Dodge pickup when he lost control and made contact with a dirt embankment, causing the truck to overturn onto the passenger side, Horning said.

Being a former high school student i know that dirt road very well. i can tell you WITHOUT A DOUBT speed played a factor in the roll over. A car/truck of that size will not roll over going 15-20 mph, embankment or not. just wait until it gets muddy out. that road will be used even more. when i was in school it was the first year of the new campus. traffic wasnt all that bad back then and alot of people still used that road, now i would imagine the use is even higher. feel bad for the driver and his/her passenger. if i were a betting man i would bet the drivers a$$ is still sore.(or atleast it shoud be)
Looking at the pictures it looks more like he tried to do a quick turn around (or a donut?). The truck is almost at a right angle to the road so whatever happened he had to be going at a pretty good clip to turn it on its side like that.
One does not roll a car without considerable speed and/or erratic driving. This was plain juvenile irresponsible behavior.
Having drove on that section of Pinon I can say that I bet the driver was going fast. The road is not that bad but like all dirt roads it is sandy, has dips, and not suited for fast drivers. I can almost bet that this kid is the same person that I have seem the track of in the past. The tracks are very telling as to the speed of the driver. Sliding at every attempt to go around dips. There is one spot where the road goes around a telephone pole and in that area I was ready to hear about a drive hitting the pole or rolling over.

Dodge pickup on it's side while cruising down an "unpaved road" hit a dirt embankment... um... 5150, I am sure you are trying to be a good supportive mother. But, it sounds to me, without more facts, that your daughter's friend was driving too fast in a vehicle (s)he should not have been driving. I would not be as understanding as you are. I do hope this has taught your daughter a lesson. Whereas her friend should not have been driving, she should not be getting in vehicles operated by unlicensed drivers who drive unsafely. As my dad always says - it is all fun and games until someone loses an eye. Thankfully your daughter is safe and a little wiser. Were it not for the fact that she got into a vehicle operated bu her friend, she would not have a scratch on her.

Yes, this is the vehicle my daughter was passenger in. Of course the driver, her friend has done nothing wrong. I don't see anything wrong with this picture does anybody else???!!!!I'm truly just very, very thankful that nobody was hurt. As for the driver...well, he is extremely lucky my kid is ok! have a nice day!

ps  by the way, this unlicensed 17 year old who is only supposed to drive with a licensed driver over the age of 18 AND not supposed to drive with passengers period.
