On Thursday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m., Tehachapi's BeeKay Theatre will ring out with the sounds of bagpipes, fiddle, keyboard, guitar, cittern, flute, whistle, bodhran, accordion and voices when the Battlefield Band comes to town. The band's motto is “Forward with Scotland's Past,” and they say they play Scottish music - 200 years in the making. Through Battlefield's mix of songs and tunes, many of them originals that have become part of the Celtic “session” repertoire, the audience will experience a bit of Scotland both old and new.
Keyboard player and lead singer Alan Reid hails from Glasgow and is a founding member of the Battlefield Band. He contributes many of the songs, particularly writing on contemporary Scottish themes. American-born master piper Mike Katz has been playing various pipes and whistles, as well as bass guitar, with the band for the last decade. Katz is a fine complement in duets with the young Scottish fiddle phenom, Alasdair White. White hails from the Isle of Lewis, and doubles on bodhran, whistle, banjo and just about anything else he can get his hands on. Guitarist and singer Sean O'Donnell is originally from Derry, Northern Ireland, and has played for numerous bands since moving to Scotland in 1996. He also plays bass, bouzouki and cittern.
Tickets for Battlefield Band are adults $25 and students $15, available at Mountain Music, 206 E. F St., in downtown Tehachapi. They may also be purchased online at www.fiddlerscrossing.com. Group and family discounts are also available. Call 823-9994 for more information or reservations.
