A new tradition returns to the Spotlight Theatre this summer, as we present the sequel to last year’s smash hit "The History of Rock & Roll" with this year’s "THE HISTORY OF ROCK & ROLL GOES TO THE MOVIES!" While last year’s production took us on a musical journey from the start of rock and roll to the present, this time around, we focus on songs from movies, dating all the way back to the early days of cinema! When our movie host meets our music host, the two combine for a show with acting, singing, dancing, and more! This show is sure to be fun for the entire family!
Excluding songs from established musicals, this year’s production has songs that were made famous because of the movies they were in! The show includes everything from Judy Garland and the Andrews Sisters to Coolio and Eminem! And we also include famous scenes from movies like Casablanca, High Noon, Singin’ In the Rain, The Graduate, Young Frankenstein, Animal House, 9 to 5, The Blues Brothers, Rocky III, Footloose, Beverly Hills Cop, Top Gun, Moulin Rouge and more! Featuring performers like Abbott and Costello, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Audrey Hepburn, The Beatles, James Bond, Barbra Streisand, Isaac Hayes, the Bee Gees, Donna Summer, Bob Seger, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Madonna, Oingo Boingo, Bette Midler, Whitney Houston, Leann Rimes, Trisha Yearwood, Celine Dion, the Soggy Bottom Boys, Peabo Bryson, Phil Collins, and more surprises!

Nick is a single, Italian-American guy from New Jersey. His parents retired and moved to Florida. That doesn’t mean his family isn’t still in Jersey. In fact, he sees both sets of his grandparents every Sunday for dinner. This is routine until he has to tell them that he’s been offered a dream job. The job he’s been waiting for--marketing executive--would take him away from his beloved, but annoying, grandparents. He tells them. The news doesn’t sit so well. Thus begins a series of schemes to keep Nick around. How could he betray his family’s love to move to Seattle, for a job, wonder his grandparents? Well, Frank, Aida, Nunzio and Emma do their level best, and that includes bringing to dinner the lovely--and single--Caitlin O’Hare as bait...we won’t give the ending away here.

A magical peach! An imprisoned boy! Insect friends! An incredible journey! This amazing adventure of James Henry Trotter will fulfill the fantasy of anyone who has ever dreamed of escape. Roald Dahl's story comes hilariously to life in this delightful dramatization that reveals the wickedness of some, the goodness of others, and the indecision encountered by many when they are faced with crises.

After The Rain King
Plays through August 5th

Saturday & Sunday at 2PM
AT THE SPOTLIGHT THEATRE
The Spotlight School of Arts is thrilled to announce our second Summer Stock Production: After the Rain King by Steph DeFerie (who also authored past summer stock hits: Nick Tickle Fairy Tale Detective and Mother Goose: Eaten by Werewolves). Produced by special arrangement with Baker's Plays and directed by Cory Rickard and Guinevere Park-Hall Dethlefson, After the Rain King is set in the late 1930's and focuses on a group of young friends with the youngest being a girl named Glory.
Glory may be just a little kid but she's in big trouble - when she accidentally opens an old, locked book she finds in an old trunk, a mysterious stranger jumps out! He declares that “I am the Rain King, The Lord Of Tears, The Master Of Sorrows, The Commander of the Darkness in your soul! I suck the happiness from your thoughts and leave only fear and desolation. Destruction is my bread and butter, loss is my meat and drink!" Glory is the one responsible for releasing him from his prison and setting him free in the world again!
Before she can stop him, he kidnaps her friend Pete and disappears back into the book. To rescue Pete, Glory and her friends must follow and soon find themselves jumping from story to story - battling pirates in Treasure Island, helping young Arthur pull the sword from the stone in Le Morte D'arthur facing down bank robbers in Prairie Rustlers and even becoming bugs! Can they save Pete, not to mention the rest of the world, from this dangerous monster or will he cast his evil spell over us all?
This funny, chilling and imaginative play with an exciting climax is perfect for the whole family! The show runs Saturday and Sundays on July 21, 22, 28, 29, August 4 and 5 at 2 PM with the house opening at 1:30 PM. Tickets are available by calling our box office at 634-0692 and are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Children under 5 are FREE! The Spotlight is located at 1622 19th Street. Come early and enjoy lunch in the Spotlight Cafe!
