Well, most of the cars here in Wyoming probably do have engine block heaters but since we moved here from Tehachapi neither of our cars have them but luckily they have had no problems with starting (knock on wood.) I'm happy to report that it is a whopping 12 degrees today...lol. I'm coming home for Christmas which means I fly in to Vegas (it's cheaper) and doesn't it figure that even there it's not supposed to get any warmer than 50 next week.
By Jan. I'll be shoving them out the door. Ha-Ha!!!!! Naw, it hasn't been that bad with them home....although my washer and dryer would disagree.
I went to Jack -In-the-Box last night around 4:35.....sitting in the drive-thru with the whole family in the car with the dog...(she wanted to go bye-bye and was hoping for a plain cheeseburger) ....anyway, we witnessed madness on the streets.. just in the time that we were waiting for our order there must of been at least 5 engine roars and alot of fishtailing and and almost two collisions....It was just crazy. I also heard that the 58 has at least 2 inches of packed ice at 7 am this morning.

Yeah scottso, I know the feeling. Went to Bakersfield High. Most of the buildings didn't have air conditioning, neither did the school buses. I lived out in the country so my bus ran at 6:30 a.m., then we would pick up the kids that went to West High drop them at school first and arrived at BHS at 7:50 a.m. In the afternoon just the reverse. BHS was picked up, then we had to go to West and wait 45 minutes, no matter how hot it was, for them to get out of class. BHS students were the last to be dropped off.
We NEVER got to go home early if it was too "hot". Now they let the poor little darlings out of school early if the temperature approaches 100 degrees and thats in schools WITH air conditioning. Maybe we students should have formed a union in my day for better treatment! LOL!

-10.... Normally I'd assume that cars would stop working by then.... but you guys must have engine block heaters or something, right? Oh man, I don't miss going through Wyoming... that much :)
That's good that they offer daycare. Most of my friends growing up were latchkey kids, but you just can't do that with little ones.
Sigh... baby kow just got mad and hit the wall... now his hand hurts and he wants me to kiss it. Good lord.

It's funny that you should say that Gube, I live in Wyoming now & I was just commenting yesterday that I can't believe they haven't cancelled school at all this week because it's -10. But in T-town if there's a slight white dusting they cancel school...lol.
You're comment about growing up in Wyoming is making me wonder if maybe I do know who you are after all...

Madkow -- the schools here have day care available til grade 7, and are usually open even on snow days. Your child can go there before or after school, or on minimum days. They can go there too before or after 1/2 day kindergarten. They also have a summer program available.

I've always wondered about this-- what do parents do when they work full time, but kids get so many days off, plus all those minimum days? In Lancaster, we'd get rain days :) But our Jr. High became Lake Park View anytime it rained more than a day. And the gutter by the donut shop was "The Mississippi" because it regularly flooded the stores.

Haha Gube, I was thinking the same thing when the phone rang for the second day at the crack of dawn. In New York I can count on 1 hand how many snow days we had in all of my school-going days.
Heck the only time school was really shut down for any length of time was when Long Island got hit by hurricane Gloria in 1985 and knocked out power to the whole island -- 2 weeks in my neighborhood... much longer for some others! I could write a whole blog just about that experience!
I swear these kids are off from school more than IN school. And then they have a "minimum day" every couple of weeks on top of that. I should have been a California teacher! I know it's going to be quite a shock to my kids when they have to actually get jobs and see how much time off you get in the "real world." ;)

Yeah duct tape works wonders! I used it to tape the kids to the chair as well as over their mouths. Never met a duct tape I didn't like!
Some local day care and preschool providers will take kids on an as needed basis, like snow days.
ruby1-4...don't forget to place a piece of duct tape over their mouths.......
I always just tied them to a chair when I left for work....
For those that take everything literally:
JUST KIDDING!!!!
