Carolyn Herrell Nelson, 1924-2018

Carolyn Herrell Nelson, 93, passed away peacefully in Fountain Hills, Ariz., on Feb. 24, 2018 after spending her last 40 years in Tehachapi.

She was born in Globe, Ariz., on Nov. 1, 1924 to Donald and Ermee Herrell and then moved to El Paso, Texas, at the age of 2 weeks where she resided until the age of 18. Her family moved to Los Angeles and she attended UCLA where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, later moving to the Bay Area and graduating from the University of California, Berkeley.

In 1945 she went to work for United Airlines as a ticket sales agent in downtown San Francisco where she met her future husband, Robert C. Nelson. The couple were married in San Francisco in 1947 and spent the next 57 years together, in various locations, until his passing in 2004 at the age of 80. Along the way they lived an active family life with their two children, Marianne and Chris.

Upon retirement, Bob and Carolyn enthusiastically embraced their new life in Bear Valley Springs, where they resided for 30 years, being charter members of the Bear Valley Springs Community Church, The Sportsman’s Club and the Woman’s Club. Many cherished memories were made through the years with family, friends and numerous pets at their beloved “Norwegian Woods.”

Carolyn is survived by her daughter Marianne Maxwell (Michael) of Rio Verde, Ariz., and granddaughters Erin Maxwell (Michael Abernathy) and Meghan Kuntz (Ben). She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, in 2004 and her son Christopher in 2014.

As per her wishes, there will be no public memorial and she will be interned with her beloved husband, Bob, at the Bakersfield National Cemetery.

We will miss you dearly, Mom and Grandma, but know that you are at peace with the Lord.
