Elizabeth Shurtz, 97, passed away on Jan. 24, 2017. She was born on a farm in New Sharon, Iowa, and moved to California to be with her husband Kenneth in 1940. Together they raised their two daughters in Eagle Rock until his passing in 1959.
In 1963, Elizabeth married William Shurtz. They spent most of their 43 years working for the Los Angeles Unified School District. Then, after retirement, they traveled, spent time with family and friends, and were involved with their church work. In 1996 they moved to Tehachapi to get away from Los Angeles traffic and to be near their grandson Scott and his family. After William’s passing in 2006, Elizabeth moved to Mountain Vista Senior Care, where she has resided until her passing.
Elizabeth’s main focus was her family and her church work. After moving to Tehachapi and joining the Tehachapi Community Congregational Church, she helped make apple pies and jam for the annual apple pie sale, as well as supporting the church music program by donating a Yamaha Clavinova. Elizabeth was always there when needed, armed with casseroles and consolation.
Elizabeth is survived by her daughter, Barbara Matthias of New Braunfels, Texas; grandson, Jim and wife, Tanya; great-grandsons, Matthew and Mason of Benton, Ark.; grandson, Kenneth and wife, Ellen; great-grandchildren, Morgan, Wade and Caitlin of Virginia Beach, Va.; and granddaughter, Wendy Foster and husband, Steve; great-grandchildren, Joshua and Elizabeth Lux, Ella, Jacob and Johnny Foster of New Braunfels, Texas.
