Fred Preston Thompson passed away peacefully on June 14, 2017 after a long battle with skin cancer.
Fred was born on Feb. 10, 1943, in Oklahoma. He was one of nine children born to R.B. and Jewel Thompson. When Fred was about four, the family moved to Tehachapi. After graduating from Tehachapi High School, he went to work at Lehigh Southwest Cement Co. (then Monolith) until enlisting in the Army. Following Vietnam, he returned to Tehachapi and resumed working at the cement plant where he retired after 42 years.
Fred met the love of his life, Gail Shearer, and they were wed on Valentine's Day in 1980.
Fred only had one son, but was a father figure to countless others. He was a polite, strong man that made a positive impact on all those around him.
Fred was preceded in death by his brother, Carl Thompson. He is survived by his wife, Gail Thompson; son, Daniel Thompson; siblings Norman Thompson, Fern Goodwin, Doris Hibbs and Randy Thompson, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Services were held June 21 at Wood Family Funeral Services, Inc. He was laid to rest at the Bakersfield National Cemetery in Arvin.
