Henry John Broderick, 1925-2016

Henry “John” Broderick, 91, passed away at his home in the care of his loving wife, Wilma, on Friday, Dec. 16, 2016.

John was born on Nov. 27, 1925, to Henry and Edith (Leahey) Broderick in Detroit, Mich. He loved both watching and playing tennis. He also really enjoyed music, and played both piano and guitar. John lived in many different places in the United States and around the world, including Michigan, Virginia, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, and California, as well as Spain, Germany and France. He came to rest in Tehachapi, Calif.

John graduated from Dearborn High School. He continued his education at Michigan State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in history in 1950. John served in the U.S. Army from 1946-1948. As a civilian, he worked for 31 years in personnel management for the U.S. Navy.

Following his retirement, John spent time tutoring adults who wanted to learn to read. He also enjoyed square dancing, traveling, reading, solving puzzles, watching theater performances, and, of course, playing music and tennis.

John is survived by his wife, Wilma (Clingenpeel) Broderick, whom he married on Nov. 2, 1991. Also surviving is his adopted son, Michael Broderick. John was loved by his many step-children, step-grandchildren, and step-great-grandchildren. His calm demeanor, gentle spirit, and interesting, intelligent perspective were a positive influence on those around him.

There will be no formal services, per his request. Memorial contributions may be directed to Optimal Hospice Foundation, 1315 Boughton Drive, Bakersfield, CA 93308. They can be contacted at 661-716-8000.
