Longtime Tehachapi resident Leo John Metzler passed away on Oct. 27, 2017, at the age of 88.
Leo was preceded in death by his beautiful wife Janan “Jan,” his older brother, Charles “Chuck” Metzler and his youngest brother, Robert “Bob” Metzler. He is survived by his three daughters, Denise Aguilar, Tracy Tonneslan and Teresa Schultz; his son, John Metzler; and his two younger sisters, Delores Lischio and Florence Johnson. He had eleven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Leo was born on Dec. 10, 1928 in Los Angeles, to Charles and Margaret Metzler. In 1939, Charles accepted a job, as the druggist, at the only drug store Tehachapi had, and moved his family from Los Angeles to Tehachapi. Leo enjoyed growing up in this small town and after high school, joined the Navy.
After serving for six years in the Navy, he went to Santa Monica College to learn auto mechanics and met the love of his life, Jan. Shortly thereafter, they married and wanting to return to Tehachapi, to raise his family, he accepted a job at Cal Portland Cement Company in Mojave.
He bought an acre of land, had built a house on Highline Road and lived there for 20 years. While living there, some Jehovah’s Witnesses talked to Jan about the Bible and showed her that the Bible says the earth will be here forever (Psalm 37:11, 29), she told Leo and he told her “baloney!" So she showed him and that started him studying the Bible and becoming one of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
You would find Leo out in the ministry almost every Saturday, then after he retired from Cal Portland, 30 years later, he was out talking to people about the Bible, several times a week until he had a stroke almost six years ago and had to have 24/7 care. Family members took turns taking care of him until he couldn’t keep his strength any longer and his body gave out. He made a big impact on a lot of people and will be deeply missed.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 21260 Golden Hills Blvd., Tehachapi..
