Louis Edward Mannatt (Little Lou), 41, passed away in Tehachapi on Aug. 23, 2017. Louis was the oldest child and the only son of Louis and Rodena Mannatt, and he was an adventurous, funny, hardworking man with a wealth of abilities and a tremendous amount of love in his heart.
Louis was born in Lone Pine on May 14, 1976. His first seven years of life were spent growing up in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada next to Independence Creek. This is where his passion for and love of nature began, and it remained with him throughout his life.
In 1984, his family moved to Tehachapi, where he spent his formative years and graduated from Tehachapi High in 1994. Louis grew up helping his family on the homestead they built themselves, where there were always animals and gardening and lots of outdoor time. After some short travels, he moved to Durango, Colo., where he started his first business called Pagosa Roofing, at the age of 23. After running this business for several years, he formed Four Corners Roofing in Durango, and later transitioned into carpentry and finish work.
He spent the next 20 years calling Durango his home. Louis loved to travel, and some of his adventures included canoeing the Yukon River in Alaska, and in the Great Lakes through Canada to the Saint Lawrence Seaway, sometimes living solely off the land.
His many travels included trips to Honduras, often with a fly fishing pole in hand, and backpacking in numerous areas. Louis was an avid fisherman, hunter, metal detector and naturalist. He was a self-led learner, with an abiding curiosity about his surroundings. Through all of his adventures, Louis made countless friends and created extended families that lasted his entire life.
Louis is best remembered for his boundless love for others, his humor, his love of the outdoors, and his new-found love of the Lord through the divine Holy Spirit. Louis was tough and uncomplaining, and he weathered many hardships, but soldiered on. Throughout his life, he struggled greatly with depression, and in the end, he went to be with his Lord and Savior. His family and friends love and miss him immeasurably.
Louis is survived by his parents, Louis and Rodena of Tehachapi; his sister, Jena Mannatt Robinson and her husband, Matt, and their three children, Hayden, Savannah and Ariana of Tehachapi. Also by sister, Shelly Mannatt Jones and her husband, Eric, and three children, Elliot, Isabel and Benjamin of Charlotte, N.C.; and sister, Andrea Mannatt Swihart and her husband, Nicholas, and their three children, Indyana, Nicolea and Theo of Tehachapi; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends.
