Sandra Kay Dressel, 1969 – 2017

In the early morning hours of Nov. 3, 2017, Sandra Kay Dressel, 48, passed away in Lancaster, Calif., after a lengthy illness. Sandra was born March 21, 1969, to Daniel L. Bishop and Maureen A. Baker-Bishop in Lancaster. Sandra moved to Tehachapi with her mother and stepfather in 1976, and remained a resident of Tehachapi for most of her life, attending local schools and graduating from Monroe High School in 1986.

She attended San Joaquin Valley College and received an associate’s degree as a dental assistant. Later, Sandra attended High Desert Medical College and received her degree as a licensed vocational nurse. She had been employed by the State of California Department of Corrections until 2015, when health problems caused her to stop working.

She had been married to Horace Goodner, and later, Ivan Dressel. Both of her former husbands were from Tehachapi. The light of her life was her daughter, Kristen Bishop. She often said that Kristen gave her life so much meaning. Sandra was such a kind, caring and giving person to all who knew her. She was the kind of person who would give the shirt off her back to someone in need. She felt she had to try to help those less fortunate than herself.

Sandy loved to go dancing, bowling, take walks on the beach, skating, being involved in the activities of her daughter and family. She especially enjoyed being with Kristen at Disneyland.

Sandra is survived by her daughter, Kristen Bishop of Visalia; parents, Curtis and Maureen Johnston of Tehachapi; sister, Jennifer Cornell of Tehachapi; brother, Curtis Johnston and his wife Jodi of Bakersfield; nieces, Ashleigh Johnston of Reseda, Megan and Cassidy Cornell of Tehachapi; and nephew, Cody Cornell of Tehachapi; a great-grandmother, Joyce Johnston of Modesto; also her special friend, Kurt Gruenstein; and friend, Jim Adams. She also was loved by numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, Daniel Bishop; her paternal grandparents, Irvin and Edith Bishop; and maternal grandparents, Paul and Vera Baker; and grandfather, Edsell L. Johnston.

This is so hard to deal with and leaves an empty place in our hearts … Sandy will be so deeply missed. Thanks to all our family and friends during this time. Bishop Shawn Teare will officiate a memorial service to be held on Nov. 17, 2017, at 4 p.m. at the Wood Family Funeral Service Chapel, 321 W. F St., Tehachapi, Calif. Services will be followed by a reception at the Woods Pavilion.
