Our mother, Soledad Luna, was 85 years old when she passed away on Aug. 22, 2017. She was born to Isabel Gutierrez and Tiburcio Saenz on Oct. 28, 1931, in Santa Barbara, Chihuahua, Mexico.
Mom followed dad to the United States in 1961 and later became a proud U.S. citizen. Mom married dad in February of 1952 in their hometown of Santa Barbara, Chihuahua. Mom had many accomplishments, yet the one that she was most proud of was, and is, her wonderful family. Another accomplishment was her extended hand in different branches of our beloved Saint Malachy’s Parish. Mom also worked as a seamstress for 19 years at our then-local garment factory.
Mom belonged to La Club Ideal, and Las Guadalupanas. As most people know, she was an excellent cook. Mom was known for her Mexican specialties, which included many delicious desserts. From her humble beginnings in Santa Barbara, Mom didn’t know that she would be a semi-world traveler. She traveled back and forth to Mexico for family, and then later traveled throughout Mexico with Dad for fun. She also ventured to Hawaii and Yosemite National Park. When one of her children moved to Alaska, she was ready to go visit; and, in fact, she went twice. Mom was also a very clean and organized lady. Her house was, and is, impeccable.
Mom is survived by our dad, her husband of 65 years, Jesus Luna; daughters, Roberta Stanwick and husband Bob Stanwick of Tehachapi, Josie Vaca and her husband Ruben Vaca of Los Angeles; sons, Jesse Luna and Brenda Luna of Bakersfield, and Ramon Luna and Jeanette Luna of Alaska; her beloved grandchildren, Stephanie Hanley, Kristopher Vaca, Jason Luna, Erik Vaca, Desiree Luna, Lizeth Vaca, Danielle Luna, Kimberly Vaca, Denali Luna and Alicia Luna. Mom’s cherished great-grandchildren include Anthony Luna, Brooklyn Luna, Josilyn Luna, Giovanni Cortes-Luna and Jesse Fickes.
