Susan Higgins Hansen was born in Brentwood, Calif., on June 30, 1934, and graduated into Heaven on Oct. 31, 2019, in Tehachapi, Calif.

Susan grew up in Brentwood, in the heart of the city, the youngest of three sisters. She completed nurse's training at Good Samaritan Hospital, Los Angeles, and later got her BS and master’s degrees from Cal State Bakersfield. She would go on to spend many years helping others in the nursing field.

Susan met Homer Hansen Jr. on a blind date and went home that night thinking he was nice, but not one she would ever marry. They were married on May 31, 1958, and thus began their life of adventure together. They would go on to raise four children, have nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and were married for 44 years, until her husband’s death in 2002.

Among many other things, Susan was a pioneer in bringing hospice from Bakersfield to Tehachapi, when it was called Bakersfield Home Health and Kern Hospice, which later would become Optimal Hospice. She also received special recognition for service in the Kern County Ombudsman Program.

There will be a memorial service in honor of Susan’s life at Mountain Bible Church in Tehachapi on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2019, at 2 p.m.

Wood Family Funeral Service has been entrusted with her care. For condolences, please visit
