1924 – 2014

Marie Lois Gist, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on April 13, 2014, at the age of 89.  Marie was born to Carl and Roxie Houston on April 14, 1924, in Ada, Okla.  She grew up the oldest of eleven children in Oklahoma.  She met Gail Gist and they married on April 5, 1943.  They moved to Pleasanton.  From Pleasanton they moved to Randsburg where they had a daughter, Roxanne Sasia, on May 10, 1947.  They moved to Frazier Park, and then Caliente, where Marie was a waitress at Bear Mountain Cafe, and later at the Clear Creek Cafe.  On Sept. 28, 1957, Gail and Marie had a son, Bryan Gist.  The majority of Marie's life was spent as a homemaker.  She loved sewing, cooking, and gardening.

In the early eighties, after losing her husband, Marie sold her house and moved to Tehachapi.  She had a very active role in helping to raise her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who affectionately called her "Me Me."  She worked hard and there was nothing Me Me couldn't do.  She painted, did carpentry work, and would undertake any project big or small.  When there was any type of labor to be done, Me Me was always there to help.  In her free time, Marie was an avid golfer.  She played golf at Golden Hills Country Club and Horsethief Country Club in Stallion Springs.  She competed in many tournaments, bringing home several trophies.

Me Me will be greatly missed by her family.  She will be remembered for her witty sense of humor, her work ethic, her cooking and baking, and her devotion to her family.

Marie is survived by her two children, Roxanne Sasia, and Bryan Gist and his wife, Evelyn; her grandchildren, Joe Sasia and his wife, Becky, Amanda Ramirez and her husband, Reuben, and Jeffrey Gist; and her great-grandchildren, Brooke Sasia, Justin Sasia, Mia Ramirez, Zoe Ramirez, Alanna Gist, and Logan Gist.  She is also survived by her sisters, Kathy, Gwen, Ruby, Jackie, and Evelyn; and her brothers, Tony and Doy.  She was preceded in death by her husband Gail Gist; her brothers, James and Don; and her sister, Edith.

A memorial service celebrating the life of Marie Gist was held on Friday, April 18, 2014, at 10 a.m., at the Wood Family Funeral Chapel.  Interment will take place at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Bakersfield.
