Alpha Marie Smithson
1922 – 2014
A funeral service was held on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at the Wood Family Funeral Chapel for Alpha Marie Smithson, 91, who passed away on April 16th, in her Tehachapi home, after a lengthy illness. She was surrounded in love with her family at her side.
Alpha was born on Dec. 20, 1922, in Checotah, Okla., to Odie and Ozie Williams. Her father was a blacksmith and her mother was a homemaker. She was one of six children. She married Clinton Smithson on April 15, 1939, in Eufaula, Okla., in a double wedding with her cousin, Leola Roark and her husband, Bill Thomas.
Alpha and Clinton came to California in 1940 in search of a better life for themselves and their family. When Clinton was drafted in 1944, Alpha took on many jobs to support her and her young son, Elbert. Besides waitressing at the Copper Kettle Restaurant, she took on ironing, and also did some babysitting. Later on, she worked at Summit Farms apple shed for Fred Patterson and also at JB’s Rexall Drug Store.
She was the typical 1950’s wife and mother. Big, delicious breakfasts would be made for her family. Her grandchildren especially liked her biscuits and chocolate gravy. She loved to cook and would always have a hot dinner ready for her family, usually enough to feed an army! When her children came home from school, they were met with a welcoming smile and a delicious snack. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, baking, and taking care of her home.
Alpha’s family and friends could never doubt her love, loyalty, and compassion for them. Her family was the most important thing in her life, and she was there for each and every one of them, delighting in their successes and picking them up and encouraging them to work through their failures. Alpha never cast judgment on others, always seeing the positive in every person she encountered.
Alpha was loved so very much by her family and will be greatly missed by all that knew her. She was a devoted member of the Apostolic Faith Church.
Alpha was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Clinton; her father and mother, Odie and Ozie Williams; her brother, Eutauh Williams; and sisters, Oleta Henderson, Elba McRaven, and Cleo Christine Williams. She is survived by her children, Elbert (Pam) Smithson of Grass Valley, Marilyn (Paul) Kaminski of Tehachapi, and Timothy (Peggy) Smithson of Fairfield; grandchildren, Steven Smithson, Lonnie Smithson, Karen (Andre) Rivera, Justin Smithson, Timothy Smithson, Joseph Kaminski, and Jennifer (Aaron) Guerra; great-children, Steven Smithson Jr., Lonnie Smithson Jr., Kayla Smithson, Aaron Smithson, Joshua Rivera, Justin Rivera, Jacob Smithson, and Aubree Rose Guerra; great-great-grandchildren, Viviana Angelique Ocampos-Smithson, and Ah’mya Marie Tucker; sister, Tressie Freeze; and numerous nieces and nephews, and many wonderful friends.
The family would like to thank the wonderful caretakers, Connie, April, Monica, and Dani, who helped make it possible for Alpha to remain in her home up to the end. They would also like to say thank you to the hospice nurses, Lyda, Brianna, and Yvonne, who were there for Alpha, and treated her with kindness and compassion. Each and every one of these very special people became a part of the family.
