William Alfred Sommermeyer of Tehachapi entered into rest at his home, on April 29, 2014.  He was 84 years old.  Interment with Military Honors will be at Bakersfield National Cemetery in Arvin on Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at 12:30 p.m.

William was born September 8, 1929, in Coalinga.  His parents, William Rudolph and Gladys (Cox) Sommermeyer moved to Bakersfield where William graduated from East Bakersfield High School in 1947, and later, Bakersfield College in 1950.  He also attended UC Berkeley and graduated in June 1952.

January 28, 1951 brought William and Marcia Ann Cliff together in marriage.  Following graduation he proudly served in the Civil Engineer Corps of the United States Navy from 1952 - 1955, during the Korean War.  He was a registered Civil Engineer with the State of California for over 55 years.

William was a camera buff and a history nut.  He liked to travel which included the Sommermeyer Family Reunion in Scribner, Neb.  He coached baseball and football.  He was selected as the 1964 Goleta Man of the Year, served as president of the Goleta Valley Library, president of the Goleta Valley Girls' Club, and chairman of the Santa Barbara County Committee on the School District Organization.  William was also a perpetual member of The Military Order of the World Wars (MOWW), commander of the General Hoyt S. Vandenberg Chapter of MOWW for three terms, chairmen of the National Security Committee for MOWW National and he received the Silver Patrick Henry Award.

Preceding him in death was his son, William R. Sommermeyer.  He was survived by his wife, Marcia Ann; daughter, Sally Payne; son, Jim Sommermeyer; daughter-in-law, Peggy Sommermeyer; grandchildren, Harmony, Joshua, Justin, Bill, Lisa, James, and Jacob; and great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Samantha, Sidney, Michael, and Ian.
