Kenneth L. Hayes
1948 – 2014
Kenneth L. Hayes passed away unexpectedly Monday, May 5 in Tehachapi. Born to Edward Kenneth and Irene Hayes Nov. 21, 1948 in Hermosa Beach, Ken spent his youth riding the waves of the Pacific Ocean and golfing on the greens in Santa Barbara.
He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Cal State Northridge. In 1971, Ken moved to Bishop and began working in the tool shop at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area where he eventually managed the Purchasing Department. It was there he met his wife Sharon in a broken down shuttle van during a snowstorm. The two married in Mammoth Lakes in 1973 and had two sons: Jeffery Allen and Christopher Lee.
During their tenure in Bishop, Ken was a member of the Bishop Volunteer Fire Department where he eventually became captain. Ken and Sharon moved to Palmdale in 1987 and operated a NAPA Auto Parts store. After selling the store and moving to Tehachapi in 2006, Ken worked as the Assistant Manager at NAPA Auto Parts, Tehachapi.
A lifelong Amateur Radio enthusiast, Ken talked to the friends he made over the airwaves daily – twice a day. However, his heart and focus was with his family – both the human and the barking four-legged members.
As his family and friends move through the days to come, his sly grin and wit will be one of the things most missed. They will remember the tenor of his voice as he’d tell a story, then stop, grin and give a small chuckle. Whether or not one could believe his story was up to the audience.
Ken is survived by his wife Sharon, sons Jeffrey (Maggie) and Christopher (Cindy) and 5 grandchildren, who will never question the love he had for them. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Linda.
Donations in remembrance of Ken can be made to the Bishop Volunteer Fire Department: P.O. Box 1236, Bishop, CA 93515.
