Harold Wayne Gilliland passed away at age 73 on June 7, in Bakersfield. His memorial service was held on Saturday, June 15, at the Wood Family Funeral Service Chapel in Tehachapi. A private burial will be held at a later date.

Wayne, a Tehachapi native, was born on August 22, 1939, the fifth child of Simon and Marie Gilliland. The family moved to Bakersfield in 1954. Wayne enjoyed sports, lettering in football and track while at Bakersfield High School, graduating in 1957.  

Wayne joined the United States Army and served his country from 1958 – 1960.  Wayne met Karen Jones at Stan’s Drive-In, in June 1960, and they were married on July 1, 1961. Wayne worked at the east Bakersfield Post Office as a mail carrier from 1960 through 1964.

He began his career with the California Highway Patrol in August 1964. He worked with the CHP in Bakersfield through 1978, and then transferred to Quincy, California. Wayne retired from the CHP in 1982. Wayne also earned a bachelor’s degree from California State University, Bakersfield. Wayne and Karen moved to Reno, Nevada, in 1982, where he became an agent for the Nevada Gaming Control Board. He retired from the Gaming Control Board as a senior agent in 1997. He then started and ran his own consulting firm, International Casinos Surveillance Network, from1997 until selling the business and retiring for the final time in 2004. Wayne and Karen moved to Tehachapi from Reno in 2004, and Karen currently resides in Bear Valley Springs.

Wayne enjoyed fishing, hunting, and was an avid sports fan. He loved listening to Vin Scully and rooting for the Dodgers. He was a huge Rush Limbaugh fan and a staunch conservative. Wayne coached youth baseball, was president of the Quincy High School Booster Club, and a member of the Kiwanis Club while living in Reno. He was also a big fan of John Wayne and Clint Eastwood, enjoying their movies and what they stood for.

Wayne was married to the love of his life, Karen, for 51 years. He was a proud father to Scott, Robin, and David; and a proud “Papa” to his grandchildren, Kylie, Kasie, Garret, Leah, Jason, and Kristopher. He was a proud father-in-law to Heidi, Billy, and Kristin.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Karen; his children and in-laws, Robin and Bill Wight, David and Kristin Gilliland, and Scott Gilliland; grandchildren, Kris, Jason, Leah, Garret, Kasie, and Kylie; siblings and in-laws, Gene and Allison Gilliland, Lois and Curt Madding, Merle and Betty Gilliland, and Greg and Caroline Gilliland.  Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Simon and Marie; his sister, Eileen Swaffer; his brother, Jimmy Gilliland; and his daughter-in-law, Heidi Gilliland.
