Erle Verdi Johnson
1923 – 2013
Born on March 3, 1923, Erle passed away peacefully at the age of 89 from congestive heart failure, surrounded by his family. He had a wonderful life and never met a stranger.
Born in Keene, he grew up in Tehachapi, where he loved to attend annual reunions with his family and friends.
Erle was a proud WWII Navy veteran who served on the U.S.S. Boise.
A graduate from San Jose State University, he was a life long educator. He was an administrator for both San Juan and Sac City Unified School Districts, and later became a health specialist for the State of California.
He was on the President’s Council for Physical Fitness, as well as the President and retired Director for the Association of Health and P.E. Educators.
After being a collegiate football player and coach, Erle became a well-known PAC-12 football referee.
Until he was too old to hike, he loved his yearly back-packing/fishing trip to Yosemite.
For almost 40 years, Erle and his wife Mary Jayne enjoyed a life of travel, gardening, golfing and dancing into their retirement.
Erle was preceded in death by his parents Erma and C.M. Johnson, brother Swede and first wife Bette. He is survived by his children Lynn Johnson, Glenn (Theresa) Johnson, grandchildren Stephanie (Dean) Ammons-Short, Kristen Ammons, Michael Johnson, Sam Johnson, and great-grandson Tyler Short.
A memorial celebration of Erle’s life will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Boy Scouts of America or San Jose State University Alumni Association.
