Prudence Sanchez Valdez

Prudence Sanchez Valdez, formerly of Tehachapi, passed away on Feb. 3. She was 84 years old at the time of her passing. Mrs. Valdez was born in Tehachapi on April 28, 1927, to parents Pablo Sanchez and Paulina Ramirez Sanchez.

At age 22, Prudence married her husband, John Valdez, in 1949; and they remained married until his passing in 1973. This union resulted in the birth of two children who were very dear to Prudence: a daughter, Helen Stroub; and a son, John Valdez, who survive to mourn her.

Mrs. Valdez was a very spiritual, very family-oriented homemaker, and she loved her children and grandchildren. She was often described as a "home-body" who took great pride in her family. Mrs. Valdez was an excellent cook and was famous for her homemade flour tortillas which will be missed by her grandchildren. She was a person who was always willing to help out, no matter what the situation, and was one who could never say "no." It has been said that she taught many, many Tehachapi ladies how to drive. Prudence loved her "novelas" on TV, and also used to love watching "Perry Mason" and the old "I Love Lucy" series.

Prudence Sanchez Valdez is survived by her children, Helen Stroub and her husband, Allen; and John Valdez and his wife, Marilyn. She is also survived by several grandchildren, Melissa Teel and her husband, Ralph; Christopher Stroub and his wife, Aubrey; and Matthew Stroub and his wife, Pam. Also, Nicolette Ramirez and her husband, Benjamin; and Paulina Valdez. Mrs. Valdez also leaves behind four great-grandchildren, Ashlon, Brenden, Jordan, and Conner. Also surviving is a brother, Severo Sanchez.

Visitation for Prudence Valdez was held at Wood Family Funeral Service Chapel on Thursday, Feb. 9, from 3 to 5 p.m. A Rosary was held at St. Malachy Catholic Church later that same evening, at 6:30 p.m. The Mass of the Resurrection was performed Friday, Feb. 10, at 9 a.m. Father Joel Davadilla officiated. A private burial will follow at Tehachapi Public Cemetery, Westside, at a later date.

Wood Family Funeral Service, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

Wind Energy

  1. Planning down on the ranch

The news that the Pahnamid Wind Energy project has been withdrawn from the County Planning Office is good news to most of us up here on the mountain. After spending several million dollars between the City of Tehachapi’s General Plan, the County’s Specific Plan, and the Kern Council of Government’s “Blueprint,” it would be foolish to start making zoning changes at the first opportunity.
