John Michael Whitlock

1951 – 2013

John was born at Williams Air Force Base in Chandler, Ariz. Being an “Air Force Brat,” he moved around quite a bit. He graduated from Rancho High School in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1969. He was a member of the National Guard. He met and married his wife, Debbie Clark Whitlock, in 1974, when they were both working at Globe Discount Store in Mesa, Ariz.

John had a love for baseball from his earliest years, playing on local Little League teams around the country as his dad got transferred to different Air Force bases as he grew up. Once grown, with children of his own, there was no way baseball was going to be gone from his life! John is probably most well known for the thirteen years he spent working with Tehachapi Little League. John held practically every position from member-at-large, to Player Agent (baseball and softball), to Vice President and the President. He was also the Chief Umpire for the Northern Region of District 51 Little League until 2005.

He was the first to institute the Big League Division at Tehachapi Little League, but his favorite accomplishment was the establishment of the Challenger Division, which let physically and mentally handicapped youth play the wonderful game of baseball. He then worked with Rosamond Little League to help them establish their own Challenger League. He could always be found at the field by just listening for his laugh.

More recently, he was the Sports Director for Bear Valley Springs Association. He worked with all sports in that community, starting the soccer league for the first time. He also instituted Fall Ball and was instrumental in getting the improvements put in to upgrade Beaubien Field. He was employed at the Whiting Center at his passing.

He is survived by his wife, Debbie; his son, Matthew Whitlock; his daughter and son-in-law, Valissa and Wes Mathewson; his parents, John and Mary Whitlock of Mesa, Ariz.; and his siblings, Paul Whitlock, Carol Eagan, and Laurel North, all of Mesa, Ariz.
A memorial service will be held at Wood Family Funeral Service Chapel, 321 West F Street, Tehachapi, at noon on Saturday, June 22. Wood Family Funeral Service is handling the arrangements.  For condolences please visit
