Fern Jacqueline Conner
1927 - 2014

Fern Jacqueline Conner passed away at her home in Tehachapi, on Jan. 1, 2014, with several members of her family by her side. She was 86. A Celebration of Life is planned for Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014, at 11:30 a.m. at Wood Family Funeral Service Chapel. Interment will follow at Tehachapi Public Cemetery - Eastside.

Fern was born in San Saba, Texas, on March 20, 1927, to Oscar “Jack” and Nellie Grace Cothren. She was the youngest of four children and had two brothers, Oscar and Rube, and one sister, Delphine. She left home when she was 14 and worked as a waitress on the naval base at Corpus Christi, Texas. While living in Corpus Christi, she was married two times and had a son by each of her marriages.

In the summer of 1948, Fern moved to Lufkin, Texas, and met the love of her life, Billie Joe Conner. The two were married on Aug. 20, 1949. In Sept. of 1959, the couple moved to Boron where they spent the next 44 years together.

Bill and Fern loved to dance and loved to travel. They visited many places, including Mt. Rushmore; the Grand Canyon; Branson, Missouri; and several of the Hawaiian Islands. After Bill passed away in 2004, she continued to live on her own, was very independent, and continued to drive for several years. She took great pride in her home in Boron, where she raised irises and roses and looked forward to a yearly visit of a mother hummingbird that chose her back porch to lay and hatch her eggs.

Fern had recently moved to Tehachapi and was staying with family members. During her brief time in Tehachapi, she made several new friends at the Farmer’s Market, at Jennifer’s Terrace, and Oak Tree Country Club in Bear Valley.

Fern was preceded in death in Dec. of 2004 by her late husband and the love of her life of 54 years, Billie Joe Conner. She is survived by her three sons and their wives, James Hancock of Lufkin, Texas, Charles “Tex” and Dorothy Thomas of Boron, and Monroe and Terry Conner of Tehachapi.  She had four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
