Richard Laurel Overfield
1936 — 2013
Richard Laurel Overfield, a 36-year resident of Tehachapi, went home to the Lord on Sept. 18, 2013, due to complications after suffering a heart attack on Sept. 10, 2013. Burial and a committal service with military honors will be on Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, at 8:30 a.m., at Bakersfield National Cemetery in Arvin. A Celebration of Life will be held that morning at 11:30 a.m., at the Tehachapi Holiday Inn Express.
Richard served in the United States Marine Corps and believed that “Once a Marine, always a Marine.” After the Marine Corps, he was hired by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy. He was with the department for 22 years. He moved on to U.S. Borax and worked at the boric acid plant for over 20 years, finally retiring at the age of 73.
Richard enjoyed the trips he and Marti took to Laughlin, Nev. for the annual LASD Retirees Roundup, where he re-connected with many friends. He loved living in Tehachapi, the land of four seasons. He would comment that you could experience all four seasons in one afternoon.
FOX News and talk radio were his vices. He loved to make comments with a voice you could hear outside.
Preceding Richard in death were his parents, Laurel and Ocie Overfield; and his son, Bob.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Martha “Marti”; his daughter, Leslie Krist and her husband; a granddaughter and a great-granddaughter.
He was Dad to Charles Friedland and Shaya Vaughan and Grandpa to a granddaughter and two grandsons. He also leaves a sister, Janelle and brother, Donald and his wife.
Richard was a good man, a good provider, a loving husband and dad. We will miss him.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Warsaw and his staff for providing CPR until Kern County Fire Department and Hall Ambulance arrived. Thank you to the doctors at Tehachapi Hospital. Thank you to the Bakersfield Heart Hospital, all the doctors, nurses and hospital staff.
