Raymond “Ray” Stanley Sweeney
Raymond S. Sweeney, Ph.D., went to be with his Lord in Heaven on Aug. 12, 2013.
Husband for 33 years, father, grandfather and uncle, Ray will be missed by all who had the privilege to know him.
Ray loved nature, wrote many children’s books and enjoyed chess.
Reading and teaching were his passions.
Ray earned his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and taught history at Bakersfield College and kindergarten at Longfellow School in Bakersfield.
He joined the Air Force as a young man and served this country with honor as a cryptographer for the NSA.
Over the years, Ray mentored many students and encouraged everyone he knew to enjoy learning.
Ray was a member of the Tehachapi Valley United Methodist Church and participated in the Match 2 Program and the Walk to Emmaus. He also sponsored children overseas for years and was devoted to his family, dogs and cat.
Ray was the strength and foundation of the family. He delighted in being a grandfather and cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren.
Ray’s sense of humor delighted everyone and he managed a smile for his wife, and a kiss to go with it every day of his life. He will be deeply missed.
Ray is survived by his wife, Wilma; sons, Jeff, Chris and Daniel; daughter-in-law, April; grandchildren, Tobey and Rayne; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services are to be held at Wood Family Funeral Service at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20.
Pastor Bert Roper and Willie Ofahengaue will preside over the service.
In lieu of flowers, it is asked by the family that donations be made to the SPCA in Ray’s name.
