Richard T. Burdine
1929 - 2014
Richard T. Burdine, 85, of Tehachapi, beloved husband and best friend of Esther (Laughlin) Burdine for over 65 years, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones he laughed with, lived for and loved on August 6, 2014.
His ministry began in 1949 in Portland, Ore. where he began preaching and leading Sunday school in a home near Mt. Saint Helens, Wash. He served 3 mission churches, including Brea, which became self supporting. He was assigned in 1962 Palms EUB and for one year in 1968, he and Marshall Ketchum were the first co-pastors in the history of the Calfornia Conference of the UMC. He then went on to Huntington Beach and Lancaster UMC, where he retired in 1992 after 41 years in charge of a congregation. After retiring, he served at UM fellowship in Bakersfield and three times interim for the UCC Church in Tehachapi. His love of life included his family, friends, fishing, camping, hunting, sports, photography, music, drama, Reiki, and Marriage Encounter.
Richard or “Dick” was born in Spokane, Wash. on April 15, 1929 and attended Whitworth College as a freshman in Spokane, Wash. and Cascade College in Portland, Ore. where he met Esther and they married October 21, 1949.
Besides his wife Esther, Dick is survived by 3 sons: Paul and wife, Pam, their children and grandchildren; David and wife, Diana their children and grandchild; and Allan and wife, Akemi and their children. He is also survived by 3 daughters: Jeanine her children; Deanne and husband, Wes, their children and grandchildren; and Rene and husband, Joey, their children; as well as nephews in Washington: Tim, Steve, Marcus & Kermit Burdine and their wives and children. He was a wonderful Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Uncle, Cousin, Pastor and Friend.
He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas & Sigrid Burdine and a brother, Thomas Jr. Burdine.
Memorial and Celebration Service is Saturday, September 13th at 1pm at Lancaster United Methodist Church, located at 918 West Avenue J, Lancaster.
