Ruth Elizabeth Harris, 1929-2013
Ruth Elizabeth Harris passed away at Sierra Oaks Assisted Living in Redding, Calif., on Friday, Aug. 23, at the age of 84.
Ruth Harris is predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Louis Jay Harris. They were married in Burbank, Calif., in 1949 after Louis completed his active duty service in the United States Navy.
Ruth Harris is lovingly remembered by her children, Sharon Lance and her husband Art of Redding, and Richard Harris and his wife Debbie of La Canada, Calif. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Micah Harris, Andrew Lance, Rachel Sullivan, Peter Lance, Betsy Lance and Joe Harris and six great-grandchildren.
Ruth Harris was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1929 to immigrant parents from Austria-Hungary. They moved west to California in 1946. She graduated from Burbank High School. After marrying Louis, they went on to establish La Canada Heating and Air Conditioning which remained in business for 33 years.
Ruth enjoyed playing the piano and organ in church and served in many leadership positions for her church. Louis and Ruth moved to Tehachapi in 1979 and were instrumental in establishing the Church of the Nazarene on Highline Road. The church claims that it would not be where it is today without the Harris’ prayers, vision and work.
A memorial service of remembrance will be held at The Veteran’s Cemetery Chapel near Redding on Friday, Oct. 18, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jerry Powers officiating. Interment will be at the Veteran’s Cemetery. Following the service, a gathering for friends and family will take place at Art and Sharon Lance’s home.
