Warren Larry Cress, 80, passed away on Oct. 7 at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital. Services were held at Wood Family Funeral Service in Tehachapi, and his burial was at the Bakersfield National Cemetery in Arvin, on Monday, Oct. 17.

Warren was born on June 17, 1931, in Green Bay, Wisc. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Marie Cress, and his older brother, Ernie Cress.

Warren grew up in the small town with green and gold running through his veins. He played football at Green Bay East High School, which is the same field that the Green Bay Packers played on at the time. After graduation, Warren had the opportunity to practice and play for the Packers for a very short time.

Warren joined the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict and served our country, both active and reserve, for eight years.

He graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in cinematography, which landed him a career with ABC television as a cameraman for 35 years. Warren had the opportunity to film many significant sporting events, including eight Olympics around the world. He was nominated for over 20 Emmy Awards and received 3 Emmy Awards for excellence in his field. Warren loved his job and the people with whom he worked.

Warren was married to the love of his life, Lyn, for 51 years. Together they raised three children, Christina, Valerie, and Cameron, along with every critter imaginable on their 45-acre horse ranch in Calabasas.

Warren loved the outdoors and on his days off could often be found taking walks, hiking, and horseback riding with his family through the hills. Once the kids were all grown up, Warren and Lyn sold the ranch house to start a new chapter of their life at a lake house in Lake Nacimiento, where they lived for nine years. Missing the ranch life, they moved to their current residence in Bear Valley Springs to be closer to family.

Warren loved his family and had a special relationship with each of his six grandchildren. He could often be seen throwing the Frisbee with his best friend, Charliebear, his dog. Warren was very proud of their ranch and the work that he had done on it, which was recently featured in the September edition of the Tehachapi Lifestyle Magazine.

Warren lived life to the fullest and had a positive impact on the people around him. He had the personality and charm that would draw people to him. Warren loved to joke around as often as possible.

He is survived by his wife, Lyn; his three children and their spouses, Christina, Valerie and Greg, and Cameron and Paula; his grandchildren, Amber, Justin, Brandon, Nicholas, Ashley, and Jamie Lyn; and his best friend, Charlie.

Charitable donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital may be made in Warren's honor.

Wind Energy

  1. Planning down on the ranch

The news that the Pahnamid Wind Energy project has been withdrawn from the County Planning Office is good news to most of us up here on the mountain. After spending several million dollars between the City of Tehachapi’s General Plan, the County’s Specific Plan, and the Kern Council of Government’s “Blueprint,” it would be foolish to start making zoning changes at the first opportunity.
