Barbara Ann Johnson passed away in a Bakersfield nursing home Aug. 17, with family at her side. She was 83 years old. Services were officiated by Rev. Ron Barker at the Wood Family Funeral Service Chapel on Aug. 22. Interment followed at Bakersfield National Cemetery in Arvin. She was laid to rest with her husband, Warren Johnson, who passed away in January.

Barbara was born Dec. 6, 1929, in Los Angeles to Rolla and Margaret Carr. Her father was a railroad telegrapher and was regularly transferred throughout Southern California. She graduated from Tehachapi High School in 1947. She met a returning serviceman at a dance in Mojave. She loved to dance and Warren was a “pretty good ‘jigger bugger.’” A week after her 18th birthday, they eloped to Las Vegas. This past December, they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
Barbara worked at the Marine Air Base in Mojave during the war, eventually working for Phil Marx in his lumber business.

Her husband, Warren, worked for his father at the Tehachapi News, eventually becoming co-publisher. When she had children, she became a housewife but also managed the display advertising billing for the newspaper at home. When her children were out of elementary school, she began working for Al Small's Tehachapi Lumber as an accountant, eventually retiring from the organization.

Barbara's most proud accomplishment was raising three children and enjoying her grandchildren. Warren and Barbara acquired multiple rental housing units; both worked extensively with upkeep and modernization of the units. Barbara also managed the accounting.

It took them 18 years to find time to once again visit Las Vegas. In their retirement years, they returned to Las Vegas and Laughlin, Nev., repeatedly with family and friends.
During both Warren and Barbara's final years, they were blessed to have so many wonderful caregivers from the Tehachapi area assisting them. The Johnsons would like to extend their appreciation for the love and care these caregivers provided.

She is survived by their sons, Ron and JoAnn Johnson of Oak Lawn, Ill., and Don and Dianne Johnson of Santa Barbara; and daughter, Susan and Neil Husband of Bakersfield. They had seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
