Mary Lorraine Herbaugh
Tehachapi resident Mary Lorraine Herbaugh went to be with the Lord on Oct. 26, 2013, after a short battle with cancer and a longer battle with dementia. She was 76 at the time of her death, and died at her home of 34 years. Private interment was held at Bakersfield National Cemetery on Oct. 31.
Mary was born in Sheldon, Iowa, on June 19, 1937, to Charles Wayne and Ethel Marie Gill and was the oldest of four children. In 1940, at the age of three, she moved to Lakewood, California, with her parents and younger sister, Charlotte. A few years later, her parents would have two more children, boys this time, Steve and Greg. She would in turn love and love to tease her brothers. She married James Evert Herbaugh, Jr. on May 17, 1969, in Las Vegas. While living in the Los Angeles area, they had two children, David and Danielle. They moved to Tehachapi in 1980 and have lived there ever since.
In her younger years, Mary loved to draw and would later pick up a pen and draw for her grandchildren. She also loved to quilt. She made quilts for all of her children and grandchildren. She collected cookie jars everywhere she went. For most of her life, she was an avid Los Angeles Dodgers fan and would listen to them on the Dodgers Radio Network before cable television came out to her house in Tehachapi. She was an excellent cook and would spoil her husband by waking up early to make him a hot lunch to take to work every day.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and her younger sister, Charlotte Lonkoski of Wisconsin. She is survived by her husband, James; her son, David Herbaugh, and daughter-in-law, Kate Herbaugh; daughter, Danielle Hall, and son-in-law, Neal Hall; grandchildren, Cayle, Wyatt, and Cody Herbaugh, and Ashley and Katherine Hall; brothers, Steve and Greg Gill.
