Barbara Kay Hayes, 67, of Tehachapi passed away on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at Tehachapi Hospital. Interment was at Bakersfield National Cemetery, Arvin on Friday, Jan. 3, 2014, at 9:15 a.m., with a memorial service that followed at Tehachapi Moose Lodge #1678 at 11 a.m.
She was born in Sallisaw, Oklahoma, on Dec. 26, 1946, to the late Carl and Nadine Boston, and shortly after moved to California. Barbara attended Delano High School, then married the father of her children, the late Bobby J. Loyd, in 1963. They were married for about 27 years. On April 24, 1993, she married the love of her life, Ray Hayes, and has been by his side until she passed. Barbara worked for many years in the hospitality industry in Stallion Springs working her way up to become, at one point, the highest paid female bartender in California. She continued to flourish in her career and became Food & Beverage Manager for many years.
Barbara was proud of her Cherokee heritage. She received two certificates from the Cherokee Nation Cultural Resource Center in speaking, reading, and writing the Cherokee language. She assigned animal guiding spirits for her family. Her spirit was Sky Bird. Barbara was a beloved member of the Women of the Moose and was elected and honored to serve as Senior Regent and successfully earned her Green Cap. The Tehachapi Moose Lodge was a second home to her, and its members were her brothers and sisters.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Ray Hayes; children, Kurtis Loyd, Randy Loyd, and Ryan Loyd; grandchildren, Sarah Graham (Callaway), Cody Hisaw, Dakota Loyd, and Liam Loyd; great-grandchild, Hope Graham; and sister, Marsha Salisbury (Boston). Her daughter, Katrina Loyd, preceded Barbara in death.
