Ethel Mary Hagenlock
1913 – 2013
Ethel Mary (Reisner) Hagenlock of Tehachapi passed away in Bakersfield on Aug. 20. She was 99 years old.
Ethel grew up on the family farm located near Seneca, S.D. She graduated from Seneca High School in 1931. She met and then married Edwin Oscar Hagenlock, "Doc," and they lived at the Reisner farm. The drought of the 1930s made farming difficult, at best; and in 1935, when their first daughter, Ruth, was a baby, they moved to the San Gabriel area in California. In April of 1945, Doc took a position in China Lake and that summer Ethel, Ruth, and baby Patricia joined him. They lived on the base until Doc's passing.
Ethel cared for her mother, Emma, from 1951 to 1979. In 1962, they moved to Reseda, Calif. There Ethel took on a new career as a reproduction clerk at Lockheed. She remained there until her mother became ill in 1979. Her brother, Clarence, suffered a stroke; and Ethel also cared for him for almost 30 years. November of 2001 brought Ethel and her daughter Ruth to Tehachapi.
Ethel had a willingness to learn how to do everything. She was involved in the Lutheran church and was secretary for the Sunday school. In her home, she taught a rhythm class to preschoolers. She loved to sew, cook, crochet, knit and made many craft projects.
Ethel has been a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by her daughters, Ruth Gilley of Tehachapi and Patricia Kendall of Ridgecrest; four grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren; niece, Carol Robinson, and her daughters, Linda Henley and Peg Mavis. Preceding her in death were her husband, E.O. Hagenlock; her parents, Rudolf and Emma Mathilda Caroline (Klug) Reisner; and her beloved grandsons, Jim Gilley and Michael Kendall.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Wood Family Funeral Service is handling the arrangements. For condolences please visit woodmortuary.net.
