For crying out loud! We're about to have another ridiculous traffic signal installed at the corner of Red Apple and Westwood Boulevard. Even the guys installing these signals told me it's stupid to put more traffic signals in town, since they already installed three traffic lights in town just in the last five months.
At Red Apple and Westwood, I can't recall in 30 years any accident at this intersection, so the bureaucrats can't use the accident excuse as a reason for more signals. If Westwood Boulevard had decent asphalt pavement to drive on, I wouldn't complain, but our politicians who oversee these "CMAX Grants" have no clue if they think a signal is going to make us motorists drive better by having us stop every block or so.
More signals will only irritate a lot of us drivers to go rogue, and we'll try to beat it through these intersections with signals before the signal turns red. Meanwhile, painted crosswalks and painted turn lanes on the pavement are almost obliterated and haven't been repainted in years.
It'll cost more than $300,000 to install these new signals and that money would go a long way to hire a private contractor to pave Westwood with an "AC Overlay." I'll bet most of us in Golden Hills would want smooth pavement to drive on and not some dumb traffic signal.
I don't know about you, but our roads badly need resurfacing. I'm tired of bumpy, rippled and uneven pavement jostling me around, and if our gas tax money is going to signals, bike lanes, curbs, slurry seals, chip seals and stuff like this, we need to get some different leadership in this state.
Westwood Boulevard is scheduled to get a 1/2- to 3/4-inch blade seal in the spring of 2020. In the meantime, don't hold your breath waiting for the roads to get fixed anytime soon.
