Tehachapi Farmers’ Market
Main Street Tehachapi's Farmers’ market has moved around over the years. It has grown and evolved. This year's Farmers’ Market moved to Railroad Park on Tehachapi Boulevard which meant everything about the market had to be revisited. What exactly was important to our Farmers’ Market? It is always difficult to take an event that has grown and move it to a smaller place unable to accommodate that growth. Priorities were set. We recognized exactly what a Farmers’ Market is. We wanted the atmosphere to have shade with grass instead of hot concrete and blaring sun; a place where the community could come together and enjoy the breeze and trees. In most communities Farmers’ Markets are a place to buy fresh, wholesome farm-fresh produce brought in by local area farmers. Farmers’ Markets generally offer a variety of vendors with agriculturally related products like flowers, nuts, olives, breads, oils, goat milk soaps, etc. this community loves having local musicians for entertainment and RR Park has a fantastic central stage which makes this possible. And, if you are going to sit down and enjoy some music, you might was well enjoy something good to eat with a refreshing drink. We have a great community of artisans in Tehachapi, so offering some handmade and made in America jewelry and crafts is fitting of offer. So that is what we offer at our Farmer’s Market. Being nominated for the Best Family Attraction validates those decisions. Thank you, we are glad we made the right decisions.

Red House BBQ
The beginnings of Red House BBQ were simple. It started off as an idea and grew from there. When my family moved to Tehachapi around seven years ago, we found that there wasn’t a place in town that served the comfort food that I grew up with and loved. On a drive through town, my wife and I discovered a building that we sat in our car across the street from and I knew right then and there that it was going to be the future site of my dream. I told my wife what I wanted and that we needed to start small and test the waters.
We bought a BBQ trailer and we started cooking at local events. Indian Tacos were all the rage and soon we started introducing Pulled Pork, BBQ Chicken and Tri Tip. The response was great and we kept on moving forward. It took years to save the money and to await the availability of that little building we sat in front of. Then, it all happened.
We signed a lease and started construction Feb. 1, 2010. My idea was to hire the best people that I could, use the best ingredients and prepare honest hand crafted comfort food. Cutting corners was not an option. We have been rockin' ever since!
A huge “THANK YOU” goes out to you Tehachapi, my wife and to my staff, the best in town. I am living my dream and I hope I never awake.

Zach Skow (Marley’s Mutts)
I’m having a difficult time wrapping my head around being nominated best local celebrity. Even more perplexing is that the nomination was earned for my positive involvement in the community and not for offensive or nefarious reasons. About four years ago, I could hardly stand the thought of myself and was gravely ill. I needed a liver transplant, my soul was depleted, I couldn’t stop drinking and I had no hope. Those days are gone! About 3-1/2 years ago I founded Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescue to help save the dogs that had saved me. The dogs I worked with and the support of this community brought me back from the brink of physical and spiritual death. It means an awful lot of this community to consider me a celebrity because I equate that with respect, and genuine respect is something that I hadn’t made a habit of earning. I have had the privilege of speaking at every school in our community as well as other institutions and organizations. I am so very humbled that people would ask me to speak about our organization with the intent of helping in any way they can. I make a habit of getting the word out any way I can, which is particularly nerve-racking because contrary to popular belief, I’m not comfortable in front of groups or a camera. I believe a man is a success when he has earned the love of children and the respect of intelligent men — and I have gained those things in this community and am extremely grateful for that. I never thought that I would be comfortable in this town or that I would find my niche, but boy was I wrong. I have definitely found my home.

Main Street Tehachapi
Main Street Tehachapi offers a year-round array of diverse events that have become a staple for the community. Locals and out of town visitors alike love the Chili Cookoff, including kids, because of the games, bounce houses, petting zoo and face painting. It’s a thrill to hear guests say, “guess what, Main Street is having a Wine Walk Downtown this Saturday (occurring twice a year) that we should go to.” Or “How about going to the fun day on Tehachapi Blvd. during the Oktoberfest” or the stroll around downtown to look at the murals. What kid doesn't love Halloween, seeing friends and costumes, making Trunk or Treat more popular every year? And, of course, many people enjoy an excuse to get dressed up and go out on the town at the Starlight Ball. But we can’t overlook how great it is to have the community come together for Farmers Market for 10 weeks each summer. Our mission is to revitalize Historical Downtown Tehachapi, to improve economic growth and help the community, and visitors, discover the area. We've been involved in design aspects of Downtown including Rail Road Park, the painting of the Water Tower, murals and Centennial Plaza. We've made suggestions for street lighting and many other improvements that the City of Tehachapi has implemented. Main Street has helped many businesses refresh their buildings too. This is our community and Main Street is an organization that helps to keep pride in the heart of our city.

Three and a half years ago we started Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescue in Tehachapi. Our goal was to help stray, abandoned, injured, hard up dogs by bringing them off the streets, out of the shelter and into our homes. That is one of the traits that makes Marley’s Mutts unique. We believe that rescued dogs, especially big dogs (which are inherently more dangerous), need be evaluated, treated and rehabilitated, not taken from one cage at the shelter and placed in another. Implementing such a program has taken a lot of work and progress through trial and error, but we have created a “pack environment” where rescued dogs live amongst each other in harmony and are retaught the basics of “a dog’s life.” Most of our dogs come from the shelter, where they are in gravest danger of being euthanized but many come from folks like you, or strays from the hospital — really, from all over. They come here — or to one of our capable foster homes in this community — and are rehabilitated, loved and allowed to learn to be dogs again. Dogs that we rescue come to live up here as if they were at camp — we have structure, rules, lots of exercise and we learn routine. This type of environment is extremely conducive to emotional, mental and physical restoration and rehabilitation. With your support and urging we have adopted out over 500 dogs to loving, capable homes. Our commitment doesn’t begin and end with rescue, but continues in the classroom. We’ve spoken about animal rescue and welfare at every school in our community with the intent of passing on our knowledge to the kids as well as encouraging them to be of service. Our rescue and this community are intertwined and our scope and capability has increased because of your support. Your support means the world to us and we are very grateful to be mentioned as one of this community’s best.

Souza Family Vineyard
Bob and Patty Souza established Souza Family Vineyard at 26877 Cummings Valley Road in 2008. The Souzas were transplants from the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, having moved to Tehachapi in 1990, leaving the business world as insurance brokers to find a simpler life. Bob and Patty purchased the Elijah Stowell Estate, an 1888 Victorian home and barns on 60 acres overlooking the valley. After years of hard work, the industrious Souzas beautifully restored the lovely historic property which they call the Souza Ranch. The ranch and gardens have hosted many charitable events, including "Cowboy Poetry" gatherings, barn dances, barbecues and weddings. Wanting to honor the agricultural legacy of the founding Stowell family and their own Italian heritage, they decided to plant a vineyard, although wine growing had not been successfully accomplished in Tehachapi. After much study, however, they determined that the warm, breezy days, cool evenings and organic soil of the Cummings Valley made this the perfect climate for the Primitivo Zinfandel to flourish. Over the years, the Souza Vineyard became a "family affair," and friends joined in to help nurture, prune and cultivate the tender plants by hand. The Souzas feel honored to be the first commercial vineyard in an historic agricultural valley. They invite you to visit, enjoy their wines and gift shop, and consider hosting an event at the vineyard.
