The debate over the proposed Walmart Supercenter is continuing in the letters to the editor column and online as opponents wait for news of when their appeal of the Planning Commission’s approval of the project will be heard by the Tehachapi City Council.
The project was approved by the Commission, 4-1, on Jan. 31 and on Feb. 10 local businessman Henry Schaeffer paid the $1,561 appeal fee which advances the matter to consideration by the Tehachapi City Council.
In addition to comments on Facebook pages for an against the Walmart project, which had the pro-Walmart group in the lead as of Saturday morning, City Councilman Shane Reed sent out a Facebook message Thursday evening inviting his Facebook friends (numbering 623) to let him know what they think about Walmart.
By Saturday morning he had 70 responses. Of those that specifically addressed Walmart, 20 were in favor of the project, 11 against and three seemed neutral.
The City Council had a meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 22, but Walmart was not on the agenda. The Council’s next meeting is Monday, March 7, at 6 p.m. at the BeeKay Theatre.
