The Junior Varsity Braves football team started the season strong with a 13-6 victory over Burroughs before suffering a setback Friday afternoon in a 31-6 defeat to Garces.

Despite the loss, Tehachapi (1-1) had standout performances on defense from Matthew Finklea, Cooper Mello, Joseph Luna, Colin Karr and Zach King, who all had multiple tackles on defense. Antonio Garcia was also credited with two sacks.

Jaron Searcy had a touchdown in the first half for the Braves, his second touchdown run of the season.

Later in the contest, the Braves were dealt a crushing blow when standout running back and linebacker Nathanael Betz suffered a broken arm in the fourth quarter. The injury will in all likelihood end his season.

“We were hit pretty hard with the injury bug in the (Garces) game and that really hurt us,” said head coach TJ Brewer. “We will have to adjust our lineup and overcome this. Once we realign our personnel we should hopefully hit the ground running starting next week.”

In the first game of the season against Burroughs, Betz scored the first touchdown for the Braves followed by a Trent Adams extra point. Jaron Searcy closed the contest with a quarterback keeper for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to clinch the victory.

Tehachapi will be in action again at home against Bakersfield Christian next Friday afternoon at home. The game will start at 5 p.m.
