The Tehachapi girls have finished their preseason holiday tournament schedule and will soon be ready for their South Yosemite League basketball season a little more than a week away.
Light on experience but heavy on enthusiasm, the Warriors have used the tournaments for some valuable fine tuning.
“We saw our first-year varsity players -- junior Anny Cantabrana, sophomore Mady Cotta and freshmen Teagan Thurman, Irey Sandholdt and Emily Williams – gain valuable experience and further refine their capabilities,” coach Jacques Vachon said.
“With 3 games left in the preseason, we will be ready to start league play,” the coach said.
The Warriors split four games in their most recent holiday tournament, the Arvin Holiday Showase.
They started the tournament on Tuesday, Dec. 27 with their second victory over Foothill this season, 61-36.
The following day, they lost twice, 55-42 to Arvin and 50-40 to Bakersfield Christian, then finished the tournament on Thursday, Dec. 29 with a 46-45 win over Taft.
Vachon said he was disappointed by the two losses because the Warriors were in control of both games through three quarters.
“The highlights were we were able to get revenge on Taft by beating them in our second encounter, and we were able to expand on our victory margin against Foothill,” Vachon said.
The Arvin game got a little rough, with the Tehachapi girls sustaining a banged up knee, cut eye, a couple of head knocks and a hurt ankle, Vachon said.
Vachon said officials might have let that game get a little out of control, but “on the positive side, the girls learned toughness and the need to assert themselves on the court.”
The Warriors led BCHS through three quarters and lost it in the fourth.
“We know we have to strengthen our game plan to push through the waning minutes of close games,” Vachon said.
The Warriors had a home game scheduled against Rosamond on Tuesday, Jan. 3, followed by two more preseason games, Thursday, Jan. 5 at Mira Monte and Tuesday, Jan. 10 at home against Highland. They begin their SYL season at Independence on Friday, Jan. 13.
