After a rough stretch in the Liberty Tournament earlier this month, the Lady Warriors soccer squad bounced back in a big way by registering a 2-0 victory over Burroughs last Thursday evening at Coy Burnett Field.
“After the Liberty Tournament we have a lot of recovering to do, many injuries to heal. Our confidence has been challenged but we are pulling through a little stronger each game,” said head coach Corin Gonzalez.
Helping to build that confidence in the most recent win over Burroughs was Ashley Villegas and Miranda Mistretta, who both had unassisted goals in the pre-season victory.
Villegas scored in extra time of the first half, connecting on a crossing shot from 10 yards out, while Mistretta recorded a goal off a deflection at the 19 minute mark of the second period to help Mountain Soccer ice the win over Burroughs.
“We are still learning how each player can help the team and in what position on the field,” added Gonzalez. “Everyone is stepping up and willing to play where we ask them to as we explore our strengths.”
Sarah Forbes recorded the shutout at keeper and stopped five shots overall against Burroughs.
Tehachapi also participated in the Wasco Tournament this past weekend and full results will be available in a future edition of The Tehachapi News.
Next up, the Lady Warriors will take on opponents in the Garces Holiday Tournament this Friday and Saturday in the Gold A Division, with a first round match against Sutter. Other teams in Tehachapi’s bracket include Golden Valley, St. Joseph-Santa Maria, Mission Oak-Tulare, Paso Robles, Bakersfield Christian, and Mt. Whitney-Visalia.
“We are encouraging the girls to keep their heads held high,” Gonzalez said. “After the Garces Tournament we will have a few weeks to recover and get ready for league play.”
