Two evenly matched basketball teams took the floor last Tuesday evening, and in the end, Tehachapi won their season home debut with a 47-44 victory over Burroughs.
With the score tied 25-25 at halftime, and Mountain Basketball used a 13-9 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter to pull out the narrow win.
Alyssa Garcia had an impressive night for Tehachapi (5-2), finishing with 18 points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists, while also hitting two three point shots in the contest.
Also contributing to the winning effort was Danielle Simpson with 10 points and Madison Frey with eight points and six rebounds.
Dani Peacon also had six points and seven rebounds and Rheanna Cowee had six rebounds and two blocked shots.
Later in the week, Tehachapi also recorded a pair of impressive wins in the Shafter Tournament with a 60-38 win over McFarland and a 57-42 win over Shafter.
Shafter was a previous league rival of Tehachapi in the South Sequoia League and the Generals were early favorites to win their own tournament before being upset. The Lady Warriors dominated the second and fourth quarters by outscoring the Lady Generals 32-12 in the periods combined to cruise to the victory.
Garcia had another huge game against Shafter, recording 23 points and five three pointers, while Cowee had nine points, nine rebounds and three blocks in the win. Peacon also had 11 points and a team high four assists.
Tehachapi also had tournament games last weekend against Liberty and Lindsay, which will be highlighted next week in The Tehachapi News.
Up next for the Lady Warriors is the Arvin Tournament, with early games scheduled against Wasco this Wednesday at 6 p.m. and West this Thursday at 4:45 p.m.
The Lady Braves recorded an impressive win over one of Kern County’s perennial powers, upsetting the Stockdale Lady Mustangs 17-16 in the Liberty Tournament this past week.
Brandi Davidson scored the winning bucket for Tehachapi (3-0) with less than a minute remaining in the fourth quarter, and a stingy defense led by Shelby Ricker and Elayna Cramer kept Stockdale scoreless to end the game.
Davidson was the high scorer for the Lady Braves, finishing with nine points overall. Other scorers included Ricker, Brooke Boyd, Maddie Cass and Angelika Kroeger each with a basket.
Tehachapi also had an earlier victory in the tournament over Ridgeview 23-15, and was scheduled to play in the semifinals of the tournament against Independence this past Saturday. Full results of the Lady Braves tournament will be available next week.
Tehachapi also had a pre-season home contest against Burroughs this past Tuesday, winning the game 35-16.
