THS frosh Metzler excels at Jr. ROTC
Freshman quarterback Tyler Metzler, who will play on the Indians football team this season, was named the top cadet in his class at the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Summer Leadership School held this past summer in San Luis Obispo.
Metzler was in the first cadet group that comprised of 95 Junior ROTC participants overall, joining with the AFJROTC/CA-891 (Bakersfield High School). The top recruit honor was received by Metzler after showing exemplary skills in the school curriculum designed to emulate a real military camp environment. Metzler participated in physical conditioning, drill and ceremonies and classwork courses on rocketry, navigation and leadership.
Metzler, who wants to join the Air Force, was one of four standout Tehachapi young men that participated in the camp. Other local participants included Tommy Garrett, Mitchell Marquez and Jared Marquez.
Garrett, a senior who competes on the THS track and field team, received multiple awards at the camp and a special achievement in marksmanship. Garrett plans on entering the Coast Guard after this school year.
Mitchell, a junior who wants to go into the Navy, received an award for physical training and navigation. Jared, a freshman, received an honor flight award. Mitchell participates in tennis, cross country and wrestling while Jared will be in football, wrestling and basketball at THS this year.
Logan Odneal, a sophomore, also participated in the summer of 2012 and is an active member in martial arts. All five young men received ten units (one year) of elective credit in aerospace science for their participation.
Helping to make this camp experience possible was Major Kris Fink (USAF, retired and Senior Aerospace Science Instructor at BHS), Indian Hills Crossfit, THS Mountain Football and Tomahawks Football programs and Tehachapi Little League.
