Standout freshman Sagun Gainey was widely regarded as the most talented baseball player in his class in the central section this past season. Maxpreps recently took notice, naming the phenom to the underclassmen (freshmen) All-American and the second team all-state squads.

On the All-American team, Gainey was recognized as one of the top 10 freshmen pitchers in the nation and joined a list of the elite top 30 freshman players in all positions.

Gainey's second team selection on the all-state team came in the utility division; where he was recognized as a standout pitcher, shortstop and outfielder. Gainey was also the only freshman to be recognized on the list, with the rest of the athletes consisting of seniors, juniors and one sophomore.

After helping guide THS to the CIF Championship Division III finals last spring, Gainey was named rookie of the year in the Southeast Yosemite League and was the team leader in stolen bases (22), batting average (.426), runs scored (48), hits (40) and triples (6), while also recording 23 RBIs and nine doubles. He was also an All-SEYL first teamer and All-Area second team athlete.

Gainey also had a good run in the little league circuit this past summer, helping Tehachapi to a Tournament of Champions and All-Star District 51 title for the senior division.
