Soccer competes in Holiday Classic

After suffering a pair of losses to open up the Garces Holiday Soccer Festival, the Lady Warriors bounced back to end the tournament on a high note with a 2-0 win over Wasco.

Tehachapi (3-3) participated in the 134 team tournament -- Gold A Division, squaring off against seven opponents in the bracket that included San Joaquin Memorial, Tulare Union, Pioneer Valley, Lompoc, Atascadero, Wasco and Winters High School.

In the win over Wasco, Madison Eberle scored the first goal for the Lady Warriors and Phylicia Esquivel clinched the victory with a goal off an assist from Miranda Mistretta.

Sarah Forbes and Ashley Rush both were credited with shutouts at keeper, logging two saves each.

In the overtime loss to San Joaquin Memorial, the Lady Warriors got on the scoreboard with a goal by Ashley Villegas, who intercepted a pass deep in Panther territory to secure the early lead. Despite the early advantage, SJM went on to tie the game later in the first period and record a golden goal in overtime for the win. Rush was credited with a shutout and four saves in the second half and Forbes had two saves in the first half and overtime.

In another tourney contest, Forbes and Rush both had three saves apiece in a 7-0 loss to Tulare Union.

Other standout performances in the tournament included Lea Mason on defense and Eva Rowe, who was praised by her coaches as playing a vital role in the overall team effort.

Tehachapi will have a pre-season contest this Friday afternoon at Coy Burnett Field against Paraclete. The game is set to start at 4:30 p.m. The Lady Warriors will also have another pre-season game at home next Wednesday, Jan. 8, against Independence starting at 6 p.m.
