Track and field season begins
Tehachapi High got their track and field season underway with a pair of meets at Cerro Coso College (Ridgecrest) and Bakersfield College these past two weeks, competing against some of the top schools in Kern County.
The first meet at Bakersfield College was hosted by East High and featured athletes from Shafter, Bakersfield, Centennial, Delano, Foothill, Frontier, Golden Valley, Independence, Liberty, North, Kern Valley along with Tehachapi.
Calvin Herman turned in one of the top times in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles with a 16.25 and 41.74 time respectively in the two events, while the relay team of Ian Neufeld, Michael Contreras, Victor Rodriguez and Skylar Valencia had an impressive mark in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:34.37. Neufeld, Contreras, Valencia and Herman also had a good time in the 4x100 relay, coming in at 44.47.
At Cerro Coso, Tehachapi competed against Burroughs, Hesperia and Kern Valley.
The Warrior men showed their strength with Andrew Jimenez finishing first in both the shot put (44' 7") and the discus (120'). Ian Neufeld was also first in the 400 (52.23), Andrew Caldwell was third in the 200 (26.70), Caleab Hutto finished second in the 200 (24.90) and Victor Rodriguez was first in the 200 (24.70). Kevin Rooney posted a 11:30 for third in the 3200 and Skylar Valencia finished first in the 300 hurdles (43.25). Calvin Herman was second in the 300 hurdles (44.20) and first in the 110 hurdles (15.72) and Isaiah Hutto grabbed two third place finishes in the triple jump (37' 5") and the long jump (17' 10.5”).
The Warrior men’s relay teams, ran by Ian Neufeld, Michael Contreras, Calvin Herman, and Skylar Valencia, finished second in the 4x100 at (45.25) and first in the 4x400 with a time of (3:36.91).
The Lady Warriors were led by Jessica Perreault finishing third in the 3200 (13:18.40), Alexis Namey third in the 200 (29.92) and Madison Eberle finishing second in the 200 (27.55) and first in the 400 (1:02.52). The Lady Warriors finished second in both the 4 x 100 (55.20) and in the 4x400 (4:47.00). Running in the 4x100 were Alexis Mason, Alexis Namey, Alexis Powell, Madison Eberle and the 4 x 400 team was led by Adrienne Jacobs, Riley Rohrer, Alexis Namey and Madison Eberle.
The Braves also performed well at the meet. Daniel Green was third in the 1600 (5:45.40), Devin Ragsdale grabbed third in the 400 (1:11.66), Spencer Loe finished second in the 200 (26.90), and Jesus Pena was second in the 400 (1:03.56) and first in the 1600 (5:35.60). Jake Walters garnered a second in the 300 hurdles (51.58) and a first in the high jump (5' 4") and Chris Rhodes was first in the 300 hurdles (50.30) and first in the long jump (16' 1"). The Braves also grabbed the 4 x 100 relay top spot with a time of (50.0) from the team of Jake Walters, Chris Rhodes, Spencer Loe and Nathan Collier. The Braves ended the meet with a first place finish in the 4 x 400 (4:25.54) from runners Devin Ragsdale, Jesus Pena, Spencer Loe and Thomas Blewett.
For the Lady Braves, Kylie Tye got things started by finishing second in the discus (65'), Brooke Gardner grabbed first in both the shot put (26' 4.5") and the discus (86' 4"). Sarah Stickney high jumped (4' 6") for first place and Anna Szymanska high jumped (4' 4") for third along with a first place finish in the 100 (14.46). "Biz" Sorvino was first in both the 800 (3:24.91) and the 300 hurdles (1:13.37), surviving a nasty fall at the finish.
Mountain Track and Field will be in action again this week at East Bakersfield High School, competing in field events on Wednesday and track events on Thursday.
