In their final tune-up prior to league, Mountain Soccer looks poised to make a run at the SEYL title after a 6-1 thrashing over Paraclete last Friday afternoon in Lancaster.

The pre-season contest against the Spirits had a slow start for THS when a well-timed cross found the foot of a Paraclete striker in the goalie box for an early 1-0 deficit.

However, it was all Tehachapi (4-3) the rest of the game, with Abraham Katona providing a spark in the 18th minute with a 30 yard booming kick for an unassisted goal.

"We didn't like the way things started out, we were a bit sluggish. Katona's goal gave us momentum and we started to settle down after that," said head coach Roger Rijfkogel. "Our touches improved as the match went on and we had very good ball control."

Freddy Benitez put the Warriors up 3-1 before halftime with two consecutive goals, the first off a feed from Dan Larz and the second off an assist from Victor Rodriguez.

Mountain Soccer continued their assault in the second half, with David Veszpeller scoring a goal off a free kick and Benitez and Katona adding two more goals for the 6-1 win.

Benitez's goal, which was fed off a pass from Rodriguez, gave him a hat trick on the afternoon. Katona's goal was a header in the box, which came off a feed from Larz.

"This was a good win for us heading into the league season. I think our guys understand the potential of what we can do offensively once we put it all together," added Rijfkogel. "We're looking forward to our first league match next week."

Mountain Soccer will be on the road against Foothill next Tuesday, Jan. 14 starting at 6 p.m.
