Off to one of the best starts in program history, Mountain Volleyball has begun their pre-season schedule without a blemish on their record.
Tehachapi (7-0) went undefeated in the South-Bakersfield Tournament earlier in September without dropping a game, breezing through their Kern County competition en route to the championship crown.
“Our girls are playing great volleyball right now,” said head coach Sally White. “They are a young team but they work so well together. They have great chemistry and it shows on the court.”
Tehachapi went a perfect 12-0 in games to win the South Tournament, defeating Arvin, Highland, Golden Valley, Mira Monte and Taft before upending Frazier Mountain in the final 25-9, 25-23.
Kim Smith had 31 kills, 12 blocks and 10 aces, Destiny Julye had 30 kills and Samantha Wallace had 16 aces and 110 assists in the six victories.
Kayleigh Jarrett was the leader in digs with 32 overall, followed by Danielle Simpson adding six blocks and 10 kills and Tiffany Short registering 16 kills.
The hot streak continued last Tuesday, August 28 with a straight game sweep over Burroughs.
Mountain Volleyball built a 12-5 first game lead over Ridgecrest and never looked back thanks in part to the dominating front court play of Julye, who finished the match with nine kills in an eventual 25-17, 25-21, 25-14 victory.
Kendall Kapitzke, Elayna Cramer, Katie Neufeld, Simpson, Smith and Short also combined for 19 kills in the sweep, while Jarrett had 16 digs and Wallace 22 assists.
“Burroughs is a strong program with a lot of talented athletes that we’ve gone up against over the years,” added White. “We’re happy we were able to notch a win against them here (in Tehachapi).”
Up next for the undefeated Lady Warriors is a home contest against West-Bakersfield Tuesday, Sept. 4 and the Ridgeview Tourney the weekend of Sept. 7-9. Mountain Volleyball will also be in action next Monday, Sept. 10 in a home contest with former SSL rival Bakersfield Christian.
Junior Varsity and Frosh-Soph
The volleyball underclassmen teams split with Burroughs Tuesday, August 28, with the jayvee squad dropping a 25-13, 25-16 decision and the Lady Indians winning by a thrilling 25-15, 22-25, 15-8 score.
Brooke Boyd and Presslee Gallegos led the Lady Braves with two kills each, with both players also combining for five aces. Jasmine Delgadillo also had six digs and Cassidy Lambeth had three digs in the defeat.
For the Lady Indians, Tessa Watts and Amanda Lara each had four kills, while Alex Peacon and Alex Caballero each had two kills.
Roni Norris and Brianna Mendez also had three aces apiece and Kaylee Lambert and Adrienne Dill had two aces each in the frosh-soph victory.
Both the Lady Braves and Indians will take on West this this Tuesday, Sept. 11 and BCHS next Monday afternoon at home. The THS frosh-soph team will also participate in the Shafter Tournament this Saturday.
