After a highly competitive tryout earlier this month, the Lady Warriors coaching staff named 12 young ladies to the varsity volleyball team.
The squad features eight returners from last year's squad, with four seniors, six juniors a sophomore and a freshman.
Seniors include Samantha Wallace, Kim Smith, Kelsey Schoenberg and Miranda Wert, while the juniors consist of Maddie Orellana, Elayna Cramer, Destiny Julye, Brooke Boyd, Kendall Kapitzke and Katie Neufeld. Rounding out the team is sophomore Alex Caballero and freshman Brooklyn Cheney.
Smith, Wallace and Julye will be the team captains this year.
"We're very excited about the season starting (this week)," said head coach Sheri Dees. "The girls are ready and (the coaches) are ready."
All three levels (frosh, jayvee and varsity) will play this Wednesday in a scrimmage in Bakersfield at Mira Monte High. The first official game of the year is this Thursday at home against Bakersfield Christian. The frosh-soph teams will start the action both nights at 4 p.m.
Rosters for the jayvee and frosh teams will be announced in a future edition of the Tehachapi News.
Julye verbally commits to UCLA
Standout volleyball junior Destiny Julye recently made a verbal commitment to UCLA after an impressive showing at a camp held at campus' Pauley Pavilion earlier this summer.
Over 200 of the best high school collegiate prospects attended the UCLA showcase, with Julye verbally committing to accept one of the four coveted scholarships from the Bruins offered for the class of 2015.
"I learned so much from the short time I was there and the coaches were extremely helpful," said Julye. "I knew I wanted to stay in the Los Angeles area and to be able to go to a great school like UCLA is amazing."
Should Julye sign a letter of intent with the Bruins her senior season, the scholarship is worth an estimated total of $132,000 over four years.
