This last October was a very significant month for the Major Jason E. George VFW Post 12114. It marked the end of our fourth year in existence. The post is starting its fifth year as a second VFW Post in our beautiful city of Tehachapi.
In the beginning, the committee met to create bylaws and make plans. It was time to decide a name for the new post. The decision was a quick and easy one. The post was named for one of Tehachapi's most outstanding citizens, Jason E. George. Jason moved to Tehachapi with his parents at the age of 2. He attended all local schools and graduated with honors from Tehachapi High School. Upon graduation, he was accepted into West Point Military Academy, and graduated second in his class. He also earned a degree from the University of Michigan. Jason served two tours of duty in Iraq. During his second tour, he was killed by a suicide bomber. Major Jason E. George was the first person to be buried at the Bakersfield National Cemetery. The veterans of this post approached his mother, Mrs. Mason, and asked to name this new post in his honor. She gave her blessing, and stated that she would be grateful that her only son's memory would not be forgotten.
The post was charted in October 2011, with a ceremony held at the Veterans Memorial Building. From the start it has been the goal of this post to assist veterans, whether members or not, to participate in community events and to contribute to youth programs. Each year, the post votes for a Veteran of the Year. This year the honor went to Daryl Black. As we begin our fifth year, we look forward to continuing our goal to support our veterans and our community.
The Major Jason E. George VFW Post 12114 meets the first Wednesday of each month at the Veterans Memorial Building at 7 p.m. Those interested in becoming a member are asked to call 823-4551 or 822-6722.
